Sitting in our comfortable coach, scrolling our Facebook feeds and watching the havoc in Tamil Nadu doesn't seem to give an answer to our questions about why are Tamilians protesting so intensely for Jallikatu. So I decided to get on the ground to check out myself.
Let me give you a brief idea about the scenario here. Men and women dressed up in black, marching like ants in the narrow roads of India, sandwiched between closed shops, under scorching hot sun with slight cool breeze tickling the ears to get to the protesting ground located at Thamukam. Kids are seen wearing bull masks, teenagers in their motorbikes whistling, students carrying posters which says"We Support Jallikatu" and "Say No to PETA" showing their support for Jallikatu. The local news channels announced the shut down of schools and colleges.
After chatting with some of the locals here,I understood the deeper consequences of banning Jallikatu. Besides playing a main role in Jallikatu, bulls are brought up as a member of farmers's family and are cared in all ways. They are seen as holy animal and have been given equal respect as GOD. These bulls also help the local farmers all year round in harvesting their paddy field.
In Jallikatu, when a bull wins, it is allowed to breed. Hence, a generation of healthy calves are born. In contrast,if the players get hold of the bull, they are awarded with title and attractive prizes.
If Jallikatu is banned, locally breeded Desi cows will come to an extinction. Only imported Jersey cows(product of cross breed) will be selectively breeded for their milk and beef. There is a huge difference in their nutritional values. Desi cows' milk are known to contain more nutritions and does not give any side effects. Whereas, the latter is otherwise. Hence, it's not only a question of culture and tradition, there is more to it.
Special thanks to Kamala Kannan and Susmitha from Madurai for sharing your opinions.
